Atlases

The Atlas, published on the 40th anniversary of the World Heritage Convention, is the first comprehensive volume with detailed maps, photographs, and information about the 962 natural and cultural sites inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List. The book also contains descriptions of these sites and statistical data. The richly-illustrated 278-page Atlas is available in separate English, French, Italian and Spanish editions. Published in a large format, the book also contains information about UNESCO and the 1972 Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage. "Heritage is our connection to the past, it is what we experience today and what our future generations will inherit," according to the Director-General of UNESCO, explaining the decision, taken by the Organization's Member States 40 years ago, to create an international legal framework for the protection of sites of outstanding universal value worldwide. The Atlas showcases UNESCO's heritage activities in every continent over the years. It features the name, type, coordinates, year of inscription and criteria of each site. Each continent is shown with a clear map, which highlights the density of sites in the region, and their numbers in each State. Different colours are used for each decade in which sites were inscribed. The same colour code is used in the list of sites, offering a view at a glance of the evolution of World Heritage listing through times.
