Lords of the Sea: A History of the Barbary Corsairs by Alan G. Jamieson

$49.99 NZD

$99.99 (50% off)
Available Stock:

Category: History

The modern increase of piracy in the waters east and south of Somalia has led some commentators to call the area the 'new Barbary'. But what of the 'old Barbary', where from around 1500 to 1800 Muslim corsairs sallied forth to capture Christian ships? For over three hundred years the corsairs of North A frica were the terror of the Mediterranean and beyond, and during that period they are estimated to have captured and enslaved more than a million Christians. The Barbary corsairs began as the maritime vanguard of the Ottoman Turkish empire, the Muslim superpower of the time. They served as a vital component of the main Ottoman fleet, as well as conducting their own independent raiding of Christian shipping and territory. Lords of the Sea covers the dramatic initial impact of the corsairs in the early 1500s, and their eventual breaking from Ottoman control in the early seventeenth century. During this time they rose to the apogee of their powers, extending their activities from the Mediterranean into the Atlantic, venturing as far as England, Ireland and Iceland. They were combatted by the major European sea powers in the second half of the 1600s, and although their activities declined after 1700, it was only in the early nineteenth century that Europe and the new United States of America finally curbed the Barbary corsair menace, culminating in the French conquest of Algiers in 1830. An engrossing tale of piracy, maritime conquest, slavery and exploration, this colourful account will appeal to the wide audience for maritime and general history. ...Show more

Ships of the White Star Line by Richard de Kerbrech

$79.99 NZD

Available Stock:

Category: Nautical

The White Star Line was one of the most illustrious and controversial names in the history of passenger shipping. Its origins lay in Liverpool in the early 19th century, chartering sailing ships to Australia, but financial difficulties led to its takeover by Thomas Ismay in the 1860s. He was the foundin g father of the Oceanic Steam Navigation Company, the official name of the White Star Line. Despite a number of disasters with heavy loss of life, the company grew quickly to dominate the North Atlantic route, with famous ships such as Britannic and Germanic taking the Blue Riband for the fastest crossing several times in the late 19th century. At the turn of the century the company established an unrivaled standard of luxury in its new quartet of ships known as the Big Four, which led to the construction of the Olympic Class, which included Titanic. Despite the sinking of the Titanic in 1912, the Olympic had a long and successful career as the flagship of the White Star Line before the financial pressures of the Depression in the 1930s forced the merger of White Star with its rival Cunard. "Ships of the White Star Line" is the fruit of years of research by maritime historian Richard de Kerbrech. In it he tells the story of the company through all 89 ships that served the shipping line, each of which is illustrated with photographs, along with detailed technical information and vivid accounts of voyages and incidents. ...Show more

Fatal Storm (POD) by Rob Mundle

THE INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER 'Whatever else Rob Mundle may write, this is likely to be his master work' Mike Power, The Mercury 'ROB MUNDLE IS A MASTER OF THE MARITIME NARRATIVE' Sunday Age Just before 1pm Boxing Day 1998, many thousands of Australians gathered - on and around Sydney Harbour, or in fron t of their televisions - to watch the start of an annual summer sporting tradition: the 628 nautical mile Sydney to Hobart yacht race. It was the 54th staging of one of the world's three classic offshore races, and the harbour was laden with excitement and colour as the 115 competing yachts jostled their way towards the start line while the countdown was in its final seconds. The moment the cannon boomed its signal, the fleet began the short dash towards the heads, before turning south and onto the waters of the Tasman Sea. It was an adrenaline-charged time for all competitors, but little did they know an unpredicted major storm cell was developing offshore and lying directly in their path. The fleet and the storm were destined to intersect. In little more than 24 hours, the majority of yachts were being hammered by hurricane-force winds and gigantic swells, some the height of 10 storey buildings. The Sydney to Hobart had become a race for survival. What ensued was the largest peacetime search and rescue mission Australia has ever known. Six sailors perished, five yachts sank, 55 sailors were winched to safety. Only 44 yachts reached the finish. ...Show more

The Sea DevilThe Adventures of Count Felix von Luckner, the Last Raider under Sail by Sam Jefferson

$36.99 NZD

Available Stock:

Category: Nautical

In 1916, a three-masted ship named Hero sailed under Norwegian colors out of the Elbe River in Germany. Loaded with cargo and ostensibly bound for Australia, she was in reality a German raider: the Seeadler, commanded by German aristocrat Count Felix von Luckner. She was tasked with destroying as many B ritish merchant vessels as possible.Told from the viewpoint of the utterly out-foxed and infuriated British Admiralty trying to capture this mysterious raider, The Sea Devil follows von Luckner's extraordinary exploits. Born into a proud German military family, he ran away to sea at the age of thirteen, returning eight years later with a knowledge of navigation and a position as officer in the German Navy, ready to take command of the Seeadler and attempt to run the Baltic blockade.Cleverly disguising the Seeadler as a Norwegian sailing vessel, with one of his crew dressing up as his wife, von Luckner fooled the British into allowing the Seeadler through the blockade. Von Luckner went on to destroy fourteen ships, but in the most gentlemanly fashion: his modus operandi was swashbuckling adventure interspersed with champagne interludes, and only one man died in the raids. These unusual techniques caused much confusion back at the Admiralty, which was unable to keep pace with von Luckner until a Danish ship reported his whereabouts near Australia. Preparing for his escape, von Luckner paid his hundreds of prisoners for their time in captivity, gave them a captured boat of their own to sail away in, and turned for the South Seas via Cape Horn. It was now a race against time between von Luckner's schooner and the fastest British cruisers sent to capture him. They all sped toward Cape Horn, the most dangerous stretch of water on the planet. This was WWI fought in the way many hoped it might be when it started in 1914: over by Christmas, lots of fun to be had, nothing too serious . . . And this is the story of a truly extraordinary character. ...Show more
